KR, HD Hyundai to develop AI-based CO2 emissions monitoring

Korean Register (KR) and HD Hyundai Global Service have entered into a memorandum of understanding with the aim of collaborating closely in the advancement of “shipping and maritime data along with artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

This agreement outlines HD Hyundai Global Service’s plan to create an AI-powered emissions monitoring system, as well as forecasting and management solutions that offer application programming interfaces and data-driven scenarios, both before and after implementing carbon reduction measures.

KR will be responsible for assessing the precision of OceanWise, HD Hyundai Global Service’s latest offering, and developing objective criteria to evaluate the effectiveness of carbon reduction systems.

KR chief executive Lee Hyung-chul said, “In this challenging time with strengthened international decarbonisation regulations, it is essential for shipping companies to find efficient ways to reduce carbon emissions to secure competitiveness, and the convergence with digital technology will be the solution. We will fully support the industry to achieve more progress in eco-beneficial digital technology through the collaboration with HD Hyundai Global Service.”

Hyundai Global Service chief executive Lee Kidong added, “We are glad to be able to officially prove the value of our solution with the co-operation of KR. Our carbon footprint monitoring system will meet the various industry demands regarding carbon emissions management and it will be a very useful tool for exploring new business opportunities.”
