Petrobras and Vale to explore low-carbon solutions

The two-year partnership agreement between Petrobras and Vale includes the evaluation of joint decarbonisation opportunities, such as sustainable fuel development (hydrogen, green methanol, biobunker, green ammonia, and renewable diesel), as well as CO2 capture and storage technologies.

The ceremony took place at Petrobras’ headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, and was attended by the CEO Jean Paul Prates, and Eduardo Bartolomeo, CEO of Vale. The partnership also provides for the evaluation of potential trade agreements for the supply of low-carbon fuels produced by Petrobras for consumption by Vale’s operations.

Petrobras’ partnership with Vale will be strategic to promote energy transition in the country. “These are the two largest Brazilian companies joining forces around a common purpose: developing the most modern solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” affirmed Petrobras’ CEO, Jean Paul Prates.

“We will leverage the production capacity, logistics infrastructure and technological expertise of these two national giants, to increase the production and supply of more efficient and sustainable fuels. This is a leap forward to materialise our decarbonisation strategy, creating demand and scale for low-carbon solutions”, he added.

“Brazil has all the conditions to lead the large-scale development of low-carbon solutions and renewable fuels, such as green hydrogen and green methanol. Vale is fully committed to reduce its carbon footprint and, therefore, wants to be a protagonist in this journey, leveraging relevant actions for energy transition in Brazil. This agreement with Petrobras fits perfectly into this context,” said Vale’ CEO, Eduardo Bartolomeo.
