UK plans to introduce carbon border tax in 2026

The United Kingdom plans to implement a carbon tax on high-emission imports by 2026 to shield local industries from unfair competition stemming from regions with lower carbon expenses, as reported by SteelOrbis following an announcement by UK Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt. This tax, part of the country’s planned carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), aligns with the EU’s CBAM activation in 2026 to prevent the influx of carbon-intensive goods into the British market that would otherwise face EU taxation.

In April, the UK government initiated consultations on various policy measures, including CBAM, aiming to mitigate future carbon emissions risks and create an ideal environment for domestic industry to transition toward decarbonisation.

Moreover, as per GMK Centre, the British government committed a £500 million ($620 million) support package to aid Tata Steel and ensure the sustainability of the Port Talbot metal plant. This substantial investment, totalling £1.25 billion with a government grant, will facilitate the installation of new electric arc furnaces (EAFs) intended to replace ageing blast furnaces. This transformation at Port Talbot anticipates a 22% reduction in carbon emissions across Wales and an 85% decrease in on-site emissions, marking a significant stride toward sustainable steel production.

“A carbon border adjustment mechanism is clearly the right fit for UK industry. However, we cannot ignore the legitimate international concerns that exist around carbon border measures. Many are concerned that a CBAM would negatively impact developing countries. Offering climate finance would help them adjust to higher UK standards.” – Jonny Peters, Senior Policy Advisor.
